Violent threats turn asylum debate into night of Islam bashing

The meeting in Steenbergen on Wednesday evening to discuss the possible opening of an asylum center in the municipality, devolved to the point where it was mostly about Islam bashing. Most of the twenty or so speakers were firmly opposed to the idea of a refugee center. The meeting was organized by the city council to find out how the residents feel about the arrival of a refugee center. The feelings seemed quite clear. Mayor Joseph Vos was greeted with boos. Those opposed to the asylum center had a number of arguments. It was said that the refugees have economic motives and that the Netherlands itself is still struggling to recover from the crisis. Some worried that the safety would be in danger, Omroep Brabant reports. Others worried about the different norms and values the asylum seekers would bring with them. There is much anxiety about not being able to sell homes once there is a refugee center in town. Still others openly admitted that they are against the arrival of Muslims. Applause and shouts of "full is full" and "asylum center no" could be heard on a regular basis. Some opponents openly expressed their anger towards the politicians. One speaker wanted to know from Mayor Vos whether he is okay with the decreasing safety in Steenbergen. Some speakers suggested that the council is for the asylum center because it would increase the number of residents, and therefore the council members' salaries. One woman got up enough courage to speak out for the refugee center, and was met by jeers. "I think we have an obligation to provide a safe haven for people who are n a war situation. I I feel the desire and duty to help others who are in need. And as you can see, I'm not afraid to say it here." Her speech was interrupted by opponents on a regular basis, and according to the broadcaster, she had to leave the building under police escort. Outside, the police was present en force. According to NU, Steenbergen implemented an emergency decree on Wednesday between 4:00 p.m. and midnight. The mayor and police announced that there were indications that some Feyenoord supporters were heading to Steenbergen to cause trouble. The situation outside remained mostly calm, however. Afterwards, Mayor Vos called the meeting a noisy and intense evening. "But ultimately all speakers were able to say their piece. That was what this was about, gauging opinions.
