Netherlands goalkeeper “devastated” by torn ACL; Stekelenburg called up

Netherlands goalkeeper Tim Krul will not be playing for the rest of the season due to a severe knee injury. Krul ruptured a knee cruciate during the Dutch team's 2-1 win against Kazakhstan on Saturday. With first choice keeper Jasper Cillessen also injured during the warm up before the match, coach Danny Blind has decided to add Maarten Stekelenburg and Kenneth Vermeer to his selection. "I'm devastated that the scan has confirmed my biggest fear, that I have torn my knee cruciate playing for Holland in the game vs Kazakhstan", Krul writes on Twitter. "I'm devastated I can't play a part on the pitch to help the team turn this season around. I still believe this club can and should be up there with the top teams." On Tuesday the Netherlands will be playing the last group match of the European Championship qualifier against the Czech Republic. The match will be played in the Amsterdam Arena at 8:45 p.m. To make the playoffs, the Netherlands has to win their match against the Czech Republic and hope that Turkey, who is two points ahead of the Dutch team, do not win their final group match against Iceland. The best third place team in the nine groups automatically go through the finals.
