Security stepped up at Leiden Univ. after mass shooting threat

Police presence was visibly increased on Tuesday at Leiden University after a threat against the institution was posted to bulletin board website 4Chan. The message was added to one of the site's sub-groups at 7:15 p.m. Monday evening, and police have not confirmed the authenticity of the threat. "Tomorrow at 10:05 i will open fire at the university of Leiden. Not gonna tell you which faculty, thats up to you to guess. Shit's gonna go down, then i'm gonna go down. Going for the highscore," a portion of the message stated. No shooting was reported at the Leiden University by 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The police force deployed several officers to each building as the message did not disclose in a location for the planned shooting. Police later said they had no reason to maintain their heavy presence, and said they would not evacuate the university. They will continue surveillance, and remain in close contact with the university about the situation, reported nu.nl. The university has itself increased patrols around its campus. Several students were shocked, but generally the response was quiet, one student told the news organization. People were smoking and drinking coffee between colleges with absolutely no sense of panic. Leiden was the center of attention for shooting threats in the past. An 18-year-old threatened to shoot a teacher and as many students as he could, leading to the temporary closure of 20 high schools and MBO’s in 2013.
