Elderly men arrested for eel fishing

Two elderly men were arrested in Reiderwolderpolder on Saturday for eel fishing. The arrests happened during a police check on fish poaching in the area. For this check, the police collaborated with the province, the forestry commission and the angling club. The two men, aged 80 and 70 years, both from the town Oldambt, were caught with 6 traps and 33 eels. They admitted to using the traps and knowing that eel fishing is prohibited because eels are protected. An official report was filed against both men. The police seized the traps and released the eels.
