Refugee squatters to leave Amsterdam building
A group of failed asylum seekers will be leaving the so-called "Vluchtgebouw" in Amsterdam at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, action group We Are Here announced. The asylum seekers have been squatting in the building since August.
The group of refugees moved into the building after they were evacuated from the so-called Vluchthaven, which was later renamed the Vluchtgarage.
According to We Are Here, the asylum seekers will be leaving the building on Jan Tooropstraat voluntarily after consultations with the owner. The building is being demolished. The group states that the owner of the building has been very helpful in the 9 months that the refugees lived in his building.
Where the asylum seekers will go now is unclear. The only other shelter available to them in Amsterdam is the temporary bed, bath and bread shelter, where they can sleep for one night and have to leave again in the morning.
The action group We Are Here was founded 2.5 years ago. The group aims to fight for failed asylum seekers who have been put out on the street.
