Coroner: Stabbed 96-year-old Oma Toni was ready to die

Toni Heeremans-de Jong, better known as Oma Toni, made the decision herself to stop her treatment after being stabbed sent her to the hospital. That is the coroner's conclusion after an autopsy on her body, AD reports. Oma Toni was stabbed on March 19th while walking in the Pijp, Amsterdam. Her stabber, 23 year old Vino H. from Arnhem, admitted that she was a random victim and that he came to Amsterdam specifically to stab someone to get back at his father for abusing him. Despite multiple stab wounds, Oma Toni manged to walk back to her home and call an ambulance. She initially recovered and it seemed that she would make it, but her condition deteriorated after a few weeks. She passed away on April 11th, three and a half weeks after the stabbing. The autopsy on her body showed that the pneumonia she had almost completely recovered from returned after her hospitalization and that psychological problems arose. Eventually Oma Toni decided that she was ready to die, according to the report. According to AD, this report makes it uncertain whether Vino H. will be prosecuted for attempted murder or attempted manslaughter or whether the charges will be changed to murder or manslaughter. H.'s lawyer believes that the stabbing was not the direct cause of death.
