Video of fatal Amsterdam West shootout released; suspects at large
Police released a video of the fatal Amsterdam West shooting on De Clercqstraat Tuesday. A 25-year-old man from Zaandam was killed in the shootout, and both of the suspects are still at large, police reported on Friday.
The events of the evening are clearly seen in the video, starting with a single shot hitting a parked car that was believed to originate from inside the Tapas Village shisha cafe. A car is then seen travelling in reverse on the right side of the screen. As the victim steps out of the car, bullets start to fly around the street just as a passing tram crosses the intersection. After the smoke cleared, both suspects take off on what police think is a black Beverly 500 scooter.
Flying bullets hit parked cars, a supermarket and the side windows of a tram passing by the scene. The victim, Youssef el Khataoui, of the shooting was known to have criminal connections, police reported earlier. Amazingly, there were no other injuries, including someone in the same car as El Khataoui at the time of the shooting.
He reported himself to police days ago after he was identified as a person of interest. Another person is sought in the investigation, who was seen running from the scene. Police released details about the man earlier on Friday, saying he appears to be in his early twenties, has a slightly darker skin color, slim build, standing between 1.75 and 1.8 meters tall.
The investigation team is taking different scenarios into account regarding the incident. Police would also like to get in touch with any witnesses who can provide further information.
Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Laan ordered the closure of Tapas Village shisha bar, which is believed to be a stronghold in the criminal underworld, frequently used for gang meetings. Two armed men wearing helmets were said to bolt into Tapas Village right before the shootout.
