Attempt to contain MRSA outbreak at Amsterdam prison

Two inmates in the Penitentiary Institution Amsterdam Over-Amstel has been infected with MRSA. They are being monitored by the medial service and are being kept isolated from other prisoners. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice told RTL Nieuws that the other prisoners have been informed about the infection. "It happens quite often, therefore there are protocols in place. We are keeping a strict eye on it", the spokesperson said. It is not clear how these two prisoners became infected, but according to the spokesperson it may have happened before they were imprisoned. MRSA is known as a "hospital bacteria" as it can cause infections in people with weakened resistance and has been known to cause epidemics in hospitals. The bacteria is resistant to treatment with meticillin and many other antibiotics.
