Man shot, stabbed and struck with an ax in Breda

Update: 6:15 p.m., 3 April 2015 -- The victim died at the hospital, police said. The article was updated to reflect the death. A man was shot, stabbed with an awl and beaten with an ax on Cypresstraat in Breda on Friday, according police and Omroep Brabant. The victim, estimated to be 35-years old, was seriously injured and rushed to an area hospital where he later died. Two arrests were made on Pijnboomstraat near the site of the violence in connection with the shooting. Officers were reportedly walking around in bullet proof vests looking for multiple offenders with the assistance of a police helicopter. Witnesses heard approximately six shots this afternoon around 2.30 p.m., Omroep Brabant reports. The victim was shot by two men at a close range, after which the perpetrators fled on foot. One or both of the suspects likely got into a red Mini Cooper and drove off, police states. The first perpetrator stabbed the victim's head with an awl while another culprit tried to strike him in the head with an ax, an eyewitness told AD. A third suspect came to the scene by car and fired six shots at the victim, striking him four times. The victim was lying in a pool of blood in one of the parking spaces and there was a long trail of blood across the parking lot, according to witnesses. A bloody ax and either an awl or a knife was also found from the parking lot. The police has identified the victim but can not reveal his identity. Police confirmed the man's death at about 5:30 p.m.
