Dutch startup WeTransfer snags €22 million investment

Dutch file transfer website WeTransfer won an investment of 25 million dollars, roughly 22 million euros, the Highland Capital Partners Europe (HCPE). The Massachusetts-based firm made the investment to increase growth and popularity of the WeTransfer service in the U.S.

WeTransfer hopes that HCPE's investment will boost the number of U.S. users, as the startup remains primarily popular with European users. "We're finalizing more campaigns and entering into more partnerships to gain advertisers there", said Director Bas Beerens, also known as Nalden, reported nu.nl. WeTransfer, founded by Beerens in 2009, allows users to send free-standing files that exceed the allowable size for most email providers. Additional services are allowed on a freemium model, with subscriptions giving users the ability to store files for longer durations, and send files up to ten gigabytes in size. The service attracts approximately 25 million users per month, completing about 70 million transfers, and has been continuously profitable since 2013, the company disclosed. Two HCPE partners, Tony Zappalà and Irena Goldenberg will now sit on the WeTransfer board, according to a WeTransfer press release.
