Threatened football ref suspends match

The match between VV Bavel and Groen-Wit was stopped after referee Luuk van Moll was threatened during half time. After the first half the referee found a threatening note in the locker room, said VV Bavel chairman Eric Joossen. He understands why the game was stopped. "If the referee feels threatened, and there is evidence, we find that he is right." According to Joossen, they have zero tolerance for aggression. According to Joossen, it was a friendly meeting except for one incident. A player of Groen-Wit was sent off with a red card for spitting. "He then walked away angrily", says Joossen. It is unclear whether there is a link between this incident and the threat. The 22 year old referee was accompanied by people of VV Bavel during his departure for safety reasons. According to Joossen he was "very emotional and overwhelmed" by the incident. Luuk van Moll said to BN De Stem on Sunday that he wants to calm down before pressing charges. "In any case I'm in contact with the KNVB about what happened." He did not make any statements about the exact content of the note. Joossen hopes that an independent party will investigate the incident.
