Monster truck driver in triple fatal crash released

Police on Wednesday released monster truck driver Mario D. from custody. The man was behind the wheel when his 1,500-horsepower truck drove into an audience after performing a stunt in Haaksbergen, Overijssel on Sunday. Three people died, including a boy, five, a 50-year-old man, and a woman in her seventies. The driver was held on suspicion of manslaughter. The prosecutor is still considering pursuing criminal manslaughter charges against him, though they did not see the driver as a flight risk. Investigators were required to either charge Mario D. with a crime or release him from custody on Wednesday, A court could have ordered him held for a longer period of time if the public prosecutor presented enough evidence to justify it. Thirteen people were still in the hospital as of Tuesday, including the four-year-old sister of the young boy who died.
