Gang targeting crypto millionaires behind Dutch man's murder in Spain: report
A gang specialized in robbing rich cryptocurrency traders was behind the murder of a 37-year-old Dutch crypto millionaire in Spain earlier this year, the Spanish newspaper El País reported after the Spanish police announced five arrests in the case.
The Dutchman was kidnapped in Mijas in April while he and his Colombian girlfriend were picking up keys to an estate where they planned to live. Four masked men dressed in black attempted to force them into a car, shooting the Dutchman in the leg.
According to the Spanish police, the abductors took the couple to a house, “where they were held for several hours while they tried to access their wallets in order to steal crypto assets.”
The abductors released the Colombian woman later, but the Dutchman remained missing. He was found dead 20 days later in a forest in Mijas, having bled out from the gunshot wound to his leg.
On Wednesday, the Spanish police announced the arrest of five people in Málaga in connection with the kidnapping and the man’s murder. Four others were also charged in Denmark. Two of them were already in custody for similar crimes, the police said.
The suspects are charged with manslaughter, deprivation of liberty, armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms, and membership in a criminal organization.
