Iceland pays Netherlands back for Icesave rescue

The Dutch government has received back the full amount that was made available to protect duped depositors of the Icelandic online savings bank Icesave in 2008/2009. In consultation with Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem, De Nederlansche Bank recently instructed that the claim on the Icelandic bank Landsbanki, of which Icesave was a branch, be sold to interested market parties and investors. Through estate distributions during the past few years an amount of €811 million was collected. The sale of the remaining claim yields to the State an amount of €623 million. Thus the entire amount made available for savers in 2008/2009 is paid back. Minister Dijsselbloem has stated that he is pleased that the sale ensured that the Dutch government received its money back in a quick manner.
