Teeven deal was by the book
The Public Prosecution was not committed to inform the Tax Department about deals with criminals, making Teeven's deal with criminal Cees H. within the guidelines, according to Minister Opstelten and State Secretary Wiebes, in a response to questions from Parliament.
The Board of Procurators General approved the deal, and chose not to inform the then minister. The Public Prosecution chose for the certainty of a settlement amount rather than the uncertainty of the outcome of the trial. Opstelten stresses that Teeven acted within the guidelines at the time. Nowadays a deal like that would have to be presented to the minister for approval.
The House will debate the matter today, but later than previously scheduled, because the responses from the Cabinet came in late. The majority of the parties is not pleased with the answer they have gotten so far.
