DNA leads to 1991 murder suspect

The Leeuwarden court sentenced Geert B. from Enschede to 15 years in prison and compulsory treatment for the murder of 8-year-old Semiha Metin from Deventer in 1991. In 2009 police finally managed to make a DNA profile of the suspect, based on traces of saliva, found on the girl's nightgown.

Semiha was strangled with her nightgown, but B., who was already a suspect at that time, was never prosecuted for lack of evidence. The court sentenced B. to 12 years in prison and compulsory treatment in 2010, but the Prosecution, who had demanded 18 years, appealed the decision. In 2009, when B. was on trial for another sexual abuse case with an infant, police found a match with the DNA from Semiha's case and a second sexual abuse case.
