Bomb blasted in Brabant

The V1 airplane bomb from World War II, found in the fields in Kruisland was detonated on site. The bomb squad had to wait for the area to 'air out,' before going in to inspect the crater in order to declare the 'all safe.' With more than 100 people from EOD, police, fire department, water board, and Public Health Services, it still took until 16:00 before the bomb could be detonated.

"The bang wasn't as hard as expected. The mayor had already warned about that. Even carbide shooting produces more noise," said reporter on site, Marieke Boerefijn, who experienced the detonation as an anti-climax. The 5,000 cubic meters of sand, which was stacked 8 meters high, was calculated to muffle the sound of the 930 kilo of explosives to produce a sound comparable to an aircraft breaking the sound barrier. Safe for 12 people, most residents didn't use the accommodations provided by the City, during the time they had to leave their homes.
