Criminal duo's link with Els Borst's death probed

Police are investigating whether criminal duo Antonius Marcos van der Ploeg and Enise Merve Bircan were involved in the death of former Minister Els Borst.

Police Commissioner Patricia Zorko said on RTL Late Night TV talkshow last night that police are looking into all possible cases the duo could have been involved in. There are no indications yet that Van der Ploeg (25) and Bircan (19) had even been in the vicinity of Borst’s house, “but we’re not excluding anything.” The duo was arrested in a hotel in Schwerte in Germany on Wednesday, after committing a Bonnie and Clyde style crimes that put more than 150 police officers on their tails. They were carrying a gun at the time of their arrest, but police did not have to use violence to apprehend them. Zorko said the arrest would not have been possible yet without tips from the community. Dutch authorities say they will soon initiate proceedings to request German authorities to extradite the duo.
