Els Borst likely crime victim

Early results of the investigation have led to police to believe the death of former minister Els Borst was a crime. After piecing together all evidence and test results the forensic team can safely conclude that Borst did not die from natural causes or an accident. Borst was a guest at a D66 congress on Saturday.

On Monday her body was found in the garage of her home by a concerned friend, after she had missed some events without cancellation, which was very uncharacteristic for her. The cause of death could not be established but a natural death was quickly ruled out, due to bruises on the body, and police started a large-scale investigation in and around the home and the neighborhood. Monday night Borst's body was transported to the hospital for an inspection. Tuesday morning the body was scanned, after which an autopsy was performed. The autopsy only confirmed that the former minister of Health did not die of natural causes, but from the injuries she sustained. Wednesday evening the conclusion was drawn that Borst most likely was the victim of a crime, based on the autopsy results, ongoing forensic investigation, and evidence found on the scene, according to a police spokesperson. Police are still looking for anyone who might have seen the former minister between Saturday afternoon and Monday evening. The family was notified of the conclusion, and the body was released Thursday. There will be a memorial service in the Dom church in Utrecht, Saturday, followed by a private funeral, according to an obituary the family posted in De Volkskrant.
