Snowboarders saved after night on Austrian mountains

Two Dutch snowboarders had to spend Sunday night stranded on a cold mountain in the Austrian Alps.

They were rescued from their perilous situation on Monday morning with a helicopter. This is what the police report from the state of Salzburg.

The two 20-year olds were snowboarding around Kaprun on Sunday evening. They strayed from the piste towards a valley, but came into an impassable area. They were hemmed in by steep rock faces, so they decided to call the rescue services.

Eleven rescuers came into action to find the duo, and they were discovered at around 2:30 a.m. They could not be evacuated immediately, so five rescuers stayed with them. After sunrise, the Dutch were air lifted by the helicopter.

Their condition is as of yet unknown.
