Man dies while running from police

A 22-year-old man died Tuesday morning after crashing his scooter into a lamppost while being chased by police. His 21-year-old passenger was seriously injured in the crash. Police officers in the Zuid Holland town of Alphen aan den Rijn saw the pair on Hooftstraat driving with no lights on. Police claim the two men sped off immediately upon seeing the officers. Police lost the scooter when it was driven onto a closed bike path. Officers sped to a different entrance to the path and found the two men lying on the street next to the scooter. The 22-year-old died at the scene. The other man was taken to an area hospital. Neither man wore a helmet, police said.
