Research into 'dioxin eggs' Harlingen
The municipality of Harlingen asked the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) to investigate eggs that were found with high levels of dioxin.The municipality announced on Monday that it wants to know why the dioxin levels in the eggs are so different from the rest of the province. The eggs were found in 13 homes that keep chickens in the municipality. The eggs are not sold in the supermarket. Large amounts of dioxin can cause severe skin abnormalities and increase the risk of cancer.

Despite the doubts from the NVWA there will soon be a discussion with the municipality Harlingen and GGD Friesland. At that point the NVWA will decide whether it wants to further investigate the eggs. It is of the utmost importance that the cause is known, says a representative of the municipality.
