Cigarette Price Doubled
Cigarettes in the Netherlands now cost as twice as they did ten years ago due to rising taxes, according to Dutch statistics bureau CBS.
Last year, the price of cigarettes went up by 15 percent because of the tax increases in April of 2012 and January of 2013 as well as the bump up in VAT back in October, 2012. Likewise, shag tobacco prices have abruptly increased by 115 percent in the past decade for the same reasons. A packet of 19 cigarettes is now at € 6. Without the taxes, it would only cost around € 1.58.
