DDoS attacks on the rise, up 35 pct.

The number of DDoS attacks grew by 35 percent over the first quarter of 2015, according to the Akamai State of the Internet Report. Over the course of the last year, the number of attacks has doubled.

The form of attacks also changed drastically, according to the researchers. Attacks last year took a lot of bandwidth and did not last very long. The average DDoS attack it the first quarter of 2015 generated less than 10 Gigabits (Gbps) per second and lasted more than 24 hours.

The harshest attack in that period generated 170 Gbps.

Hackers seem to be focusing more on the gaming industry, with 35% of all attacks focused around it. About 25% of the attacks were directed at software and technology. Akamai also notices a rise in the number of "highly dedicated attackers" - politically motivated activist hackers who try to advance their cause with attacks on high-profile corporate or governmental organizations.
