1-year-old boy left alone at Schiedam daycare after staff miss closing check
A 1-year-old boy was left alone at a daycare center in Schiedam on Thursday evening after staff failed to notice the child at closing time, Rijnmond reports. Police intervened, and an internal investigation by childcare organization KomKids was launched. The child is doing well, according to the provider.
The incident took place at a daycare site on Eduard van Beinumlaan in Schiedam, at the Bellefleur location. When the child’s parents arrived to pick him up after closing time, they found a locked door and discovered that their son had been left inside asleep. Staff had overlooked the toddler during closing procedures.
The parents immediately contacted police. Officers responded and ultimately freed the child from the facility. An ambulance was also dispatched as a precaution, but medical assistance was not needed.
KomKids confirmed that the employees involved have been suspended while an investigation is underway into how the situation occurred. In a written statement, KomKids said, “We have started an investigation. We take this incident extremely seriously. Our goal is to fully understand how this could have happened and to do everything to prevent recurrence in the future.”
The organization also issued an apology to the family, saying, “We realize that this has been a very shocking and impactful event for the child and his parents. We have since personally offered our sincere apologies to the parents involved.”
