A large early-morning apartment fire on Blankenstraat in Amsterdam-Oost’s Czaar Peterbuurt neighborhood killed the building’s resident and forced evacuations of surrounding homes on Saturday, Veiligheidsregio Amsterdam-Amstelland reports. The blaze produced heavy flames and thick smoke before firefighters brought it under control.
Fire services received the first report at about 5:00 a.m. on Saturday. When crews arrived, flames were already visible coming from the front of the residence, prompting an immediate escalation to a “large fire” response with additional fire engines deployed.
The Amsterdam-Amstelland Safety Region issued an advisory at 6:01 a.m., saying: “There is a major fire on Blankenstraat in Amsterdam-Oost. If you are experiencing smoke nuisance, close windows and doors and switch off mechanical ventilation. More information will follow.”
About one hour after the initial report, firefighters had brought the blaze under control. Responders discovered the resident inside the house during the operation. Authorities have not released the identity of the victim.
