Major fire at Maastricht waste facility involving hazardous materials

A large fire broke out Saturday morning at a waste processing facility in Maastricht involving hazardous materials, L1 reports.

The blaze erupted in a warehouse at the facility, located in the harbor area north of Maastricht. Thick smoke from the fire drifted toward Bunde, leading firefighters to advise residents affected by the smoke to close windows and doors and switch off mechanical ventilation systems.

Authorities said it remains unclear which hazardous substances are stored in the burning warehouse. Emergency services are conducting measurements in the surrounding area, according to the regional safety authority. So far, no dangerous concentrations of released substances have been detected.

Fire crews responded with significant equipment and personnel. Specialized firefighters from Chemelot, the chemical industrial complex near Geleen, were deployed to assist, bringing an extended firefighting arm for the operation.

A large perimeter has been established around the site to facilitate firefighting efforts. Businesses in the immediate vicinity are currently inaccessible. No injuries have been reported.
