Prosecutors seek five-year sentence for “spiritual healer” accused of raping two women

Those in the Netherlands in life threatening danger should immediately dial 112 for emergencies, and anyone suffering from depression or contemplating suicide can call 113 Zelfmoordpreventie at any time by dialing either 113 or 0800-0113, or by visiting 113.nl.

Prosecutors have recommended a five-year prison term for 67-year-old Luis M.G. at a court hearing in The Hague, accusing him of raping two young women who had approached him for spiritual healing sessions. According to the prosecutor, both women were in a vulnerable position when they sought his help, which he then exploited.

One of the victims had sought M.G.’s help for issues including persistent headaches. Prosecutors say that on December 23, 2019, he intoxicated her in a garden shed in The Hague and then carried out extensive sexual acts. She did not come forward until 2023, as her parents had previously opposed filing a report.

A second complaint was filed in August 2024, in which M.G. is said to have followed a comparable and, in the prosecutor’s words, “sophisticated” approach. He would initially gain the women’s trust, only to act after encouraging them to drink, according to prosecutors.

M.G. has rejected all accusations, stating at the close of the proceedings that he “did nothing.” The prosecutor argued that his accounts have been inconsistent and lack credibility, while describing the victims’ statements as trustworthy.

Through their lawyers, both women presented impact statements detailing the profound effect on their lives. “I felt dirty, shattered, and completely powerless,” one said, adding that the ordeal led to suicidal thoughts. The second victim chose not to appear in court, writing that the idea of facing “the man who ruined my life” leaves her breathless.

The defendant has a prior conviction for indecent conduct and remains on probation from that case. Prosecutors are additionally pushing for a five-year ban on practicing his profession, as well as a restraining order. His lawyer described the demanded prison term as “disproportionate.”

A ruling in the case is scheduled for April 2.
