Arcadis cut 1,100 jobs last year, mostly outside NL; More layoffs expected in 2026
Consulting and engineering firm Arcadis cut 1,100 jobs last year and expects to make further cuts this year. The Dutch company faced a difficult year, partly due to increased political uncertainty worldwide. Many of the jobs lost were in Canada, where Arcadis is struggling with a disappointing real estate market.
Total employment at the company dropped to approximately 34,000 employees in 2025. Arcadis noticed across the board that companies sometimes postponed major projects due to the political uncertainty. In the Canadian real estate sector, staff shortages and rising material prices, in particular, put pressure on Arcadis’ workload.
The company also had to lay off people in its mobility solutions business. This occurred in the United Kingdom and Australia and was partly due to an expiring contract.
In the Netherlands, the company says it achieved very good results. Therefore, no restructuring was necessary there. Arcadis has approximately 2,500 employees in the Netherlands. The company is working on several projects, including the Amsterdam Zuidasdok. This project is intended to improve accessibility to Amsterdam and the northern part of the Randstad.
Arcadis is also working on projects in Europe related to the energy transition, such as grid expansion. According to the company, there is significant growth in this area.
The fact that sustainability is becoming a lower priority in the United States under president Donald Trump doesn’t really bother Arcadis. Europe was already Arcadis’ main source of contracts from companies seeking to become carbon neutral.
In the U.S., Arcadis works extensively in the area of water solutions. This includes contracts from companies that are faced with PFAS contamination and ask Arcadis to develop a plan to resolve it. According to Arcadis, these types of projects have not been affected by Trump’s policies.
All in all, revenue fell slightly last year to €3.8 billion. Profit amounted to €208 million, down 14 percent from the previous year.
Arcadis does not expect revenue growth in 2026. Because of inflation, the company believes further restructuring is necessary. The company expects layoffs, but cannot yet say how many jobs will be cut.
