Video: Police car fatally strikes man on N31 near Leeuwarden

A man was killed early Sunday after being struck by a police vehicle on the N31 near Leeuwarden, authorities and local media reported.

According to the Leeuwarder Courant, the fatal incident occurred around 4:45 a.m. Sunday on the N31 and involved a police car from the Noord-Nederland police unit, according to the officers. The man died at the scene.

According to local journalists and photographers who were at the scene, the man had shortly before crashed his own car into a guardrail and was standing by the road waiting for emergency services when he was hit by the police vehicle.

A police spokesperson said that account could not be confirmed. The investigation into the precise circumstances continued Sunday morning.

The victim's age and place of residence have not been disclosed. Police said the Rijksrecherche has launched an investigation into the collision.

Because of the incident, the N31 near Leeuwarden was fully closed in both directions for several hours. Traffic was diverted.
