Three arrested after shooting on A59 near Heusden; One Injured
Gunfire erupted on the A59 highway near Heusden on Thursday night, leaving one man with minor injuries and leading to the arrest of three individuals. Police confirmed Friday that the detainees, aged 18, 21, and 28 from Rotterdam and Capelle aan den IJssel, were traveling in a Kia that was intercepted and "boxed in" by two other vehicles near the Nieuwkuijk area.
While initial reports suggested a single motorist was targeted in a drive-by shooting, authorities have since updated their account. It now appears the confrontation involved at least three vehicles. After being fired upon, the car pulled over on the highway, and its passengers exited near a service station. One passenger in the Kia sustained minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital before being taken into custody. An eyewitness reported seeing bullet holes in the car’s windshield.
The investigation has taken a complex turn, as police clarified Friday that it remains uncertain which occupants from which vehicles opened fire. A search is currently underway for the two other cars involved: a small white Volkswagen and a large black vehicle, the latter of which likely sustained damage during the encounter.
An eyewitness and local media suggest the shooting could be linked to conflicts in the criminal underworld, but police have not confirmed this.
Police closed the off-ramp on the A59 for several hours to conduct a forensic investigation of the scene. While investigators are still determining the exact sequence of events, they have clarified that it is not yet certain which occupants of the various vehicles involved opened fire. Authorities have issued an urgent appeal for dashcam footage from anyone traveling on the A59 on Thursday evening.
