Dutch theaters, concert halls saw sharp rise in attendance in 2024

Attendance at Dutch theaters and concert halls rose sharply in 2024, reaching approximately 23.5 million visits. That figure is about 2 million higher than in 2023 and stands 21 percent above pre-pandemic levels, according to Statistics Netherlands. Venues also staged more concerts and performances than the previous year, with an increase of 7 percent.

With 57 percent of total visits, music concerts were the most popular events at Dutch venues in 2024. The number of concertgoers rose by 14 percent compared with the previous year, and music performances remained the most commonly scheduled type of show.

Cabaret and kleinkunst showed the strongest growth, with attendance up 16 percent. Dance and movement performances, however, attracted slightly fewer visitors, down 1 percent, despite an increase in the number of shows staged.

Dutch performance venues generated approximately 1.2 billion euros in revenue in 2024, up 9 percent year on year, according to Statistics Netherlands. Operating costs increased as well, by roughly 8 percent. Despite revenues marginally exceeding expenses overall, many venues remained in the red: 46 percent closed the year with a shortfall. Most venues are organized as nonprofit foundations.

Beyond the overall attendance figures reported by Statistics Netherlands, data focusing on pop venues point to strong expansion in that segment as well. The Association of Dutch Pop Venues and Festivals reported that its member venues attracted 6.72 million visits in 2024, marking an 8.1 percent rise from the previous year. Concert attendance drove much of that growth, climbing by nearly 14 percent.

According to the VSCD’s Podia 2024 annual report, theaters and concert halls recorded approximately 15 million visits in 2024. That total represents a 9 percent rise from the previous year.
