Man, 28, sentenced to 10 years prison for murder, possession of child sex abuse videos
The District Court of Amsterdam handed out a prison sentence of 10 years plus mandatory psychiatric treatment in a TBS facility to 28-year-old Otman K., who was found guilty of fatally stabbing a 23-year-old. The victim, named Idriss, was stabbed in the chest with a meat knife on the evening hours of August 8, leading into August 9, 2024, at Hoofddorpplein in Amsterdam-Zuid. K. was additionally found guilty of possessing child sex abuse videos and a gas-powered pistol.
He has consistently denied committing the stabbing. Alongside his prison sentence and TBS, he is ordered to pay 80,000 euros in compensation to the victim’s parents, brother, and sister.
The court ruled that K. had planned the attack in advance. “The purposefulness and resolve with which he stabbed the victim are deeply shocking,” the court stated. That night, the victim was spending time on the square with friends. K., allegedly disguised in a car cover, charged at him and stabbed him. As the victim tried to flee, he fell to the ground and died within minutes.
The folded tarp containing the knife was left at the scene, and K.’s DNA was found on it. The court determined that K. is the person seen on surveillance footage running away right after the stabbing. No video shows the act itself, and K. could not provide an alibi.
Prosecutors had sought 16 years in prison with mandatory psychiatric treatment against K. during a hearing in December. The court handed down a shorter sentence, citing his reduced criminal responsibility and the mandatory TBS treatment.
K. has a prior record, including offenses committed as a minor, many involving violence, and was previously assessed as having behavioral and personality issues.
The court noted that K. seemed to have singled out the victim, as he perceived him to be part of a group that had been harassing and threatening him.
