Minister says all the flight cancellations cost KLM and Schiphol reputation and money

KLM and its home base at Schiphol Airport suffered significant reputational damage this week after over 3,500 cancellations caused by severe winter weather, according to caretaker Infrastructure Minister Robert Tieman (BBB).

Speaking before the start of the ministerial council, Tieman said he believes an evaluation is necessary to ensure Schiphol learns from the disruptions. "We must assess what happened so the airport can draw lessons," he said.

The minister expressed understanding for the "truly exceptional circumstances" that the aviation sector faced. Still, he noted that certain areas are "open to improvement," pointing to Schiphol’s preparedness.

Tieman highlighted that, in addition to reputational harm, the aftermath of the disruptions comes with high costs, including compensating large numbers of passengers affected by KLM cancellations.

Tieman did not specify exactly what should be improved but suggested several options for consideration. He mentioned investments in equipment to de-ice aircraft, while also questioning whether such investments are justified given the rarity of extreme winter weather in the Netherlands.
