Travelers stuck for 8 hours on plane at Schiphol only to find out flight is canceled
Passengers on a flight from Amsterdam to London were stuck in a stationary plane at Schiphol Airport for around eight hours on Sunday before the flight was eventually canceled. The massive delay was partly due to the winter weather.
Travelers boarded the plane at 1:20 p.m. The British Airways flight was scheduled to depart at 1:45 p.m. At around 9:00 p.m., the flight was officially canceled. The passengers disembarked and left the airport.
British Airways told NL Times that the massive delay was due to several confluencing factors. The airline and Schiphol service providers were unable to pin down a time to de-ice the aircraft, a British Airways spokesperson told NL Times. As the delay grew, eventually the crew was no longer allowed to fly due to restrictions on the number of working hours they had put in for the day, he said.
Passengers were offered a voucher, and the airline tried to help them arrange accommodations and rebooking. Considering the volume of travelers facing issues this weekend and on Monday, passengers were also told they should consider either taking a Eurostar train to London, or if they find their way to another airport serviced by British Airways, the airline will try to get them home from that location
Speaking AT5, a spokesperson for Schiphol spoke of an “excessive” delay that’s “not nice for anyone, especially not for the passengers.”
The winter weather severely impacted the Amsterdam airport. Over 400 flights were canceled at Schiphol Airport on Sunday, and the cancellation counter on Monday is already above that.
