Suspect arrested after teenage boy killed in Nijmegen fireworks accident

Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the death of a teenage boy who was killed in a fireworks accident in Nijmegen shortly after midnight Thursday. Authorities say the suspect may have played a “culpable role” in the incident.

The victim, whose age has been reported as 16 or 17, died on the Meeuwse Acker in the ’t Acker neighborhood. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

“In the investigation into this victim’s death, we are examining whether others played a culpable role in this tragic event,” police said on X. “In that context, a person has been taken into custody.”

Police did not release the suspect's identity. They also reportedly declined to confirm the victim’s exact age.
