Officers arrested the two suspects in the nearby vicinity shortly after the shooting in the Nieuw-West area. They also arrested the man who had been taken to the hospital shortly after. It is common for multiple people involved, including the victim, to be taken into custody until it is clear who played which role.
Although the Netherlands is relatively safe compared with many other countries, the number of reported shooting incidents has increased in recent years, particularly in urban areas such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague. Many of these incidents are linked to organized crime, though some occur in public areas.
