Half of Netherlands residents dissatisfied with housing supply in their area

Half of adults in the Netherlands are dissatisfied with the housing supply in their region, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported based on its latest survey, “Perceptions.”

Two in five people aged 18 and over expect the housing supply to deteriorate in the coming years. One in five thinks it will improve.

A quarter is satisfied or very satisfied with the housing supply in their region. People are considerably more positive about the availability of other amenities. 84 percent are satisfied with the availability of sports facilities, and 82 percent with the available restaurants and cafes.

Residents of Noord-Holland and Utrecht, in particular, are dissatisfied with the housing supply. In those provinces, approximately 60 percent of adults are dissatisfied and have relatively negative expectations about the future housing supply.

In Zeeland and the northern provinces, residents are more often satisfied. However, Zeeland residents are less positive about the availability of other amenities, such as hospitals, cultural institutions, and schools.

CBS’s Perceptions Survey focuses on current societal issues and how the Dutch population experiences them. Perceptions 2024 looked at inequality of opportunity, while previous editions focused on topics like climate change, lifestyle, and the living situation of young people.
