Rotterdam police seize digital devices from nine men in child sexual abuse content probe

Dutch police seized digital devices from nine men aged 21 to 62 this week as part of an investigation into child sexual abuse material, police reported. The suspects, from Rotterdam, Dordrecht, Barendrecht, and Capelle aan den IJssel, are accused of possessing sexual images of children.

Authorities acted on reports from cloud services and social media companies. The material is now being investigated further under the direction of the Public Prosecution Service, and unknown victims are being sought.

The seizures were carried out under Operation Veilige Haven (Operation Safe Harbor) by the Rotterdam Unit’s Team for Combating Child Pornography and Child Sexual Tourism (TBKK), with support from digital investigators and the vice squad.

“By downloading child pornography, you perpetuate the abuse of children,” said Dennis Sneeuw, TBKK team leader. “These suspects sustained the demand for child pornography and, with it, the abuse of children. That is why we act decisively, ensuring that downloading and possessing child pornography does not go unpunished. Through effective investigations like this, the police and Public Prosecution Service continue sending a clear signal that such crimes have consequences.”

TBKK has 175 investigators across the Netherlands focusing on child sexual abuse content and child sexual tourism, including 16 in Rotterdam. “We investigate thousands of reports every year. The work is intense, and the images are disturbing, but that drives our professional dedication. By identifying victims and apprehending suspects, we make a difference,” Sneeuw told Rijnmond.

“We encounter cases involving thousands of different children,” said Detective Sander, who works at the Rotterdam TBKK unit. “Even after ten years, I still come across images that shock me.” He described his office, where prints of rescued children’s handprints hang on the wall, symbolizing victims saved from exploitation.

Sander emphasized that investigators undergo psychological preparation before handling material. “Potential new colleagues undergo image tests and can decide if this work is suitable. You either can handle it or you cannot. I can. My previous work with the street and vice police prepared me, but some images are still very hard to see.”

Although the job involves reviewing disturbing content, Sander stressed that investigators also spend much of their time writing reports. “We focus on a good cause. Even at social gatherings, discussing our work is intense, but we are dedicated to reducing child exploitation.”
