TikTok launches election center for Dutch parliamentary elections
Starting Tuesday, TikTok users in the Netherlands can visit the platform’s Election Center, a dedicated page providing official information about the Dutch elections scheduled for late October. TikTok says the page is designed to help users find trustworthy information more easily.
Videos about Dutch politics on TikTok now often feature a link at the bottom labeled “Get information about the Dutch elections.” Clicking it takes users to TikTok’s Election Center, where they can find detailed information about the elections and guidance on spotting misleading content. The page references official sites like kiesraad.nl, waarismijnstemlokaal.nl, and isdatechtzo.nl.
It also outlines the platform’s rules for government bodies, politicians, and political parties, who are prohibited from advertising, fundraising, or earning money on TikTok.
TikTok stated that the Election Center “builds on the lessons learned from safeguarding the integrity of our platform in over 200 elections worldwide since 2020. It also reflects our broader commitment to provide users with reliable information while taking harmful content off the platform.”
TikTok works with more than 20 fact-checkers active worldwide, including the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa),which serves as TikTok’s local fact-checking partner for Dutch-language content, to identify and label misleading content. Content that cannot be verified is marked as “unverified” and is less visible on the platform.
Accounts belonging to governments, politicians, and political parties are not allowed to run ads or use TikTok’s monetization features during the election period. These measures are intended to ensure fair and transparent information dissemination.
The most recent polls show the far-right party PVV leading. The Geert Wilders led party also finished with the most seats after the last election in 2023. This led to a coalition of the PVV, BBB, NSC, and VVD. The CDA, and GroenLinks-PvdA follow Wilders' party in the polls.
