First hearing set in case of teen Lisa’s murder, Amsterdam court confirms
The Amsterdam court has announced that the first public hearing in the case of the suspect accused of killing 17-year-old Lisa will be held on November 25. Lisa was fatally stabbed in the early hours of August 20 in Duivendrecht while cycling home from Amsterdam to Abcoude.
The suspect was detained at an asylum seekers’ center run by the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA). Alongside the charge of murdering Lisa, he is also suspected of committing a rape in Amsterdam and an attempted sexual assault on August 10.
The man claims to be from Nigeria, though the Public Prosecution Service stated in early September that his exact country of origin had not yet been fully confirmed.
The preparatory hearing is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. The case itself will not yet be addressed in detail, and it remains unclear when substantive proceedings will begin. No further information about the hearing has been disclosed.
Lisa’s murder caused a great deal of unrest throughout the country. A campaign pushing for better safety for women, called We Claim the Night, was launched with a fundraiser eventually raising 509,379 euros. This led to Amsterdam pledging to invest 6 million euros to improve women’s safety.
