Traffic disruptions to hit Amsterdam region as N247 roadworks begin Sunday
Traffic in the Amsterdam region faces continued disruptions as large-scale roadworks are set to begin on the N247 between Volendam and ’t Schouw, according to NH Nieuws. The provincial roadworks on the N247 start Sunday evening and are expected to last approximately six weeks, with completion scheduled for Monday, October 27.
The N247 will be fully closed at multiple points during this period. Travelers between Amsterdam and Volendam are advised to use public transport or carpool to reduce congestion on surrounding roads.
The first major closure will be the intersection at ’t Schouw, beginning Sunday at 8 p.m. The work there is expected to last one week and will include asphalt replacement. A portion of the N235 leading to Watergang will also be closed. Emergency services and public buses will still have access, and the road will remain open to cyclists. Drivers must take detours via the A10, A8, A7, and N244.
A provincial spokesperson warned drivers that the construction will have a significant impact: “It’s going to be busy, especially during rush hour.”
After the intersection work, the province will perform extensive maintenance on the N247 stretch between Monnickendam and Volendam. This section will be closed for one month starting Friday evening, September 26.
Even after the official completion on October 27, certain sections of the N247 south of Monnickendam will reportedly remain narrowed, with speed limits reduced to 50 kilometers per hour until the end of the year.
