Cyclist severely injured in Nieuwveen hit-and-run; police arrest 22-year-old suspect
A 19-year-old woman from Nieuwkoop was left severely injured after being struck by a car in Nieuwveen during the early hours of Sunday morning. The driver fled the scene, but police later arrested a 22-year-old man from Hoofddorp, according to Omroep West.
The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on the Oude Nieuwveenseweg, where the victim was cycling with a group of friends. According to police, the driver of the car continued in the direction of Geerweg after hitting her. Police initially said they were looking for a gold-colored BMW, likely a 1 Series, with significant damage to the front.
Emergency services, including a trauma helicopter, responded quickly. The woman was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
“The cyclist was severely injured. The driver drove off after the collision,” the Kaag en Braassem police team wrote in a post on Facebook.
They called on witnesses or anyone with camera footage to come forward, and urged the driver to report himself.
