Proposed postal law could cost 4,500 regional post employees their jobs

Thousands of employees at regional Dutch post companies allegedly face job losses due to a proposed revision of the postal law set for debate in the Tweede Kamer after the summer, BNR reported.

The changes would remove guaranteed access to PostNL’s network for smaller operators, potentially making deliveries outside their core areas more expensive. Business Post, a cooperative of 27 regional post firms, warned that roughly 4,500 workers could be affected.

The law would allow PostNL to set prices freely for regional companies, which critics say could block smaller operators from reaching clients beyond their regions.

BBB Kamerlid Henk Vermeer called the proposal unfair to potential new entrants and announced plans for an amendment to maintain network access for regional firms.

Business Post plans a nationwide campaign starting August 21 aimed at safeguarding legal access to PostNL’s network and pushing for oversight by the Authority for Consumers and Markets to guarantee fair competition. PostNL told BNR it is monitoring the situation and will evaluate the potential impact once more details emerge.
