Three swimmers caught in rip current off Texel coast; Two rescued, one drowned

Three swimmers got caught in a rip current off the coast of Texel on Sunday. The emergency services pulled them out of the water. One drowned. Another was taken to the hospital, a spokesperson for the island’s coast guard told RTL Nieuws.

The emergency services, including an air ambulance carrying a trauma team, responded to the call of swimmers in trouble near De Koog on Texel at around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. They rescued three people from the water.

One of the victims was resuscitated at the scene. Emergency workers placed privacy screens around them. It was to no avail. The swimmer died.

A second swimmer was taken to a hospital for treatment. Their condition is unknown. It is also unclear how the third swimmer is doing.

A rip current is a channel or opening between two sandbanks through which water flows strongly out to sea. This type of current can easily sweep away a swimmer caught in it.
