Most Netherlands residents live within 1.5 km of a cafe, 5 km of a museum

Netherlands residents generally don’t have to travel far to find entertainment. Almost everyone in the Netherlands lives less than 2 kilometers from the nearest café and less than 5 kilometers from the nearest museum. Other attractions like cinemas, zoos, or indoor playgrounds are also close by for almost all Dutch people, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported.

In 2023, the average road distance to the nearest museum was 4.2 kilometers. The average Dutch person has three museums within 5 kilometers of them. Amsterdam residents are the most privileged when it comes to museums, with an average of 21 to choose from within 5 km of their home. The Hague and Leiden follow with 13 and 11 museums, respectively.

Amsterdam residents are also spoiled for choice when it comes to cinemas, with an average of six within 5 kilometers of their home. Utrecht and The Hague follow with five and four, respectively. The average Netherlands resident has one cinema within 5 kilometers of their home.

The average distance to a café in 2024 was 1.4 kilometers. On average, Netherlands residents have 3 cafés within 1 kilometer of their home. Residents of The Hague and Amsterdam have 10, and Rotterdam residents have seven.

Food options like snack bars, lunchrooms, and ice cream parlors are also widely accessible, with an average distance of 800 meters. In the four largest cities and the provinces of Noord-Brabant and Limburg, residents of almost all municipalities have a snack bar or similar within a kilometer.

The average distance to an attraction like an amusement park, zoo, or indoor playground was 5.6 kilometers in 2024. Here, Vlaardingen, Hattem, and Goirle are the lucky ones, finding an attraction within 1.7 kilometers of their home. Travel distances are greatest for Wadden Island and Zeeuws-Vlaanderen residents to a Dutch attraction, but residents of border regions may find closer attractions in Germany or Belgium.
