Amsterdam opens skatepark on highway tunnel's roof
The municipality of Amsterdam Zuidoost has opened a new 125-meter-long skatelane in Brasapark, a green recreational area built over the concrete tunnel roof of the A9 motorway. The lane, which officially opened this week, offers a new challenge for skaters of all skill levels and is the only facility of its kind in the city, according to the municipality.
Located next to metro station Gaasperplas, the skatelane winds through Brasapark with a series of tight curves, small hills, and various skate obstacles. The course consists of two crossing routes shaped like an embrace, or brasa, and covers a total area of 1,600 square meters.
According to the municipality, the design was created in collaboration with local skaters and "integrates seamlessly" into the landscape. “Because it is so low, it will blend into the green surroundings,” the municipality said in a statement.
The course was constructed by Nine Yards, a skatepark builder based in Breda. The new lane is suitable for multiple skate disciplines, including skateboarding, inline skating, BMX, and stunt scootering.
It includes distinct zones with obstacles at different difficulty levels, designed for four skate styles: snakerun, pumptrack, street, and bowl. The addition complements the existing stangenpark and freerunpark already present in Brasapark.
