Sending a letter to Dutch address now cheaper from Germany

After tobacco, gasoline, and some groceries, it is now also cheaper to post your mail in Germany. Sending a basic letter or postcard to the Netherlands from Germany is now six cents cheaper than sending the same mail from a Dutch post office, RTL Nieuws reported.

The price of a Dutch stamp has increased significantly in recent years. Since July 1, a simple stamp costs 1.31 euros, up from 69 cents a decade ago. Sending a postcard or letter weighing less than 20 grams from Germany to the Netherlands is six cents cheaper at 1.25 euros.

Six cents won’t make much of a difference unless you want to send a large number of letters. But it may be worth it for people in the border regions to detour a bit to send their mail.

Residents of Zeeland and Noord-Brabant, hoping to do the same in Belgium, are out of luck. Sending an item up to 50 grams from Belgium to the Netherlands is still significantly more expensive at 2.90 euros.

Despite the stamp price increases, PostNL is still suffering heavy losses on mail delivery. The company asked the government for a subsidy of 68 million euros to maintain letter delivery this year and next. The government refused to provide that aid, so the postal company is taking the matter to court. Without aid, PostNL may be forced to lay off postal workers, the company warned on Monday.
