Driver arrested after hit-and-run injures elderly cyclist in Meeden
Police arrested a 35-year-old man from Westerwolde on Saturday evening in connection with a hit-and-run earlier that day in Meeden. He is suspected of striking a cyclist and fleeing the scene.
The victim, a 73-year-old woman from Oldambt, was seriously injured in the crash. The incident occurred on the Beneden Veensloot in Meeden.
After the collision, the driver fled in a small gray car. Police issued a Burgernet alert with a description of the vehicle, warning that it may have sustained front-end damage. It was last seen heading in the direction of Winschoten and Pekela. Several hours later, police located the vehicle and arrested the suspect. He was taken in for questioning.
Authorities have not yet released any information about the cause of the crash or why the driver failed to stop. The victim was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.
