Video: Fire badly damages Amsterdam fish shop; Multiple homes evacuated
A fire broke out at a fish shop on Ruys de Beerenbrouckstraat in Amsterdam Nieuw-West overnight. The blaze badly damaged the fish shop. The adjacent hair salon also sustained water damage from the extinguishing work, the Amsterdam fire brigade reported. Twelve surrounding homes were evacuated.
The fire brigade responded to the blaze at around 1:00 a.m. Smoke and flames were already coming out of the fish shop’s roof. Firefighters started extinguishing while the police evacuated locals.
Firefighters struggled to get into the fish shop to fight the blaze, AT5 reported. The shop’s roller shutters were closed, and the fire brigade had to cut a hole through with an angle grinder to get inside. They also had to demolish a wall to get enough access.
After getting into the building, the firefighters quickly got the fire under control and extinguished it. The evacuated locals were able to return to their homes at around 3:00 a.m.
No one got hurt. The fish shop was badly damaged. And the adjacent hair salon also sustained some damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
One local told NH Radio that she was sleeping when the evacuation started and didn’t immediately realize what was going on. “I heard banging and thought I was having a nightmare, but later I heard residents telling me to get out.” She feels sorry for the owner of the fish shop. “He’s a very nice man.”
